Are All Ceramic Coatings the Same?

Some people may think “wax is wax” or “soap is soap”, or similarly, “all ceramic coatings are the same”. However, those people couldn’t be further from the truth - not all ceramic coatings are the same!

Detailers (especially the Auto Club team) enjoy nerding-out on the science behind products, brands and even application methods. We often dive deep into what makes the best products better than others so we can feel confident offering them to our clients - ceramic coatings are no different. Through extensive testing, here are a few key differences that we found will separate quality coatings from the rest:

  1. Composition: Ceramic coatings are typically made of nano-ceramic particles suspended in a chemical solution. The composition of these particles can vary, affecting the coating's durability and performance. Some of the different kinds include silica (SiO2), titania (TiO2) or graphene.

  2. Durability: Ceramic coatings can differ in their longevity and resistance to various environmental factors, such as UV rays, chemicals, oxidation, and scratches. Some coatings may offer longer-lasting protection than others.

  3. Application Process: Different ceramic coatings may have specific application requirements. Some coatings may require multiple layers, while others may be applied in a single layer. The curing time, preparation steps, and skill level required for application can also vary.

  4. Performance: Ceramic coatings can provide different levels of gloss, hydrophobicity (water-repellent properties), and ease of maintenance. Some coatings may enhance the paint's appearance more effectively or offer additional benefits such as increased resistance to water spotting or dirt accumulation.

  5. Brand and Price: Various brands offer ceramic coatings with different features and reputations. The pricing can vary depending on the brand, the quality of the coating, and the level of service provided by the installer.

When choosing a ceramic coating for your car, it's important to consider your specific requirements, budget, and preferences. Researching and comparing different coatings, reading customer reviews, and consulting with professionals can help you make an informed decision.

We always recommend educating yourself, especially when making a large purchase. However, with something that can be as complex as ceramic coatings, trusting your professional installer may be in your best interest.
